The Powerpuff Girls is an American animated television series created by Craig McCracken for the Cartoon Network. The series stars three kindergarten-aged girls who have superpowers. Created accidentally after Professor Utonium knocks a bottle of Chemical X into the concoction, The Powerpuff Girls become the heroes on Townsville, USA, fighting away various monsters and villians.
The series originated from McCracken's CalArts student film, which later became part of a series of shorts on Cartoon Network's animation showcase series What a Cartoon!. The show was picked up for a full season run by Cartoon Network and premiered on November 18, 1998. The show was renewed for multiple additional seasons, ending at 79 episodes on March 25, 2005. Produced by both Hanna-Barbera and Cartoon Network Studios during its run, The Powerpuff Girls was the last official television production by Hanna-Barbera.
The series was the fourth series to be spun from What a Cartoon!, and is the fifth series under Cartoon Cartoons (a collective name for early Cartoon Network original series). The Powerpuff Girls was commercially and critically successfuly in its heyday; the show was nominated for an Emmy Award five times and a film based on the show, The Powerpuff Girls Movie, was released theatrically in 2002. In 2009, much of the original crew reunited to produce the tenth anniversary special The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!!. The complete series was released on DVD in 2009, and reruns currently air on Cartoon Network's retro animation channel, Boomerang.
