Carved Halloween pumpkins are known as jack-o-lantern. It is named so after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs. The jack-o-lantern pumpkin is prepared by cutting the top. The insides of the pumpkins are then scooped out to make it hollow. Then on the outer surface, a scary figure is carved, generally of a monster. To add to the effect, a light is placed inside the hollow pumpkin in the night to make it look even scarier.
